Our Fight Team Win

We had 9 of our Urban Fight Team competing at the Muaythai National Championships on the weekend at Tallebudgera.  The lead up to the fights was gruelling, with Blair and Ritchie pushing the fighters to their best from the very start of the year. This was a 2 day event with the semi-finals on the Saturday and Finals on Sunday; depending on the number of fighters in each division, our team was looking at up to 3 fights each to reach gold.

All fighters were required by Muaythai Australia to attend a pre-fight weight check registration the day before the fights, and on every morning of the tournament.  Each weigh-in went smoothly, with all our fighters having no trouble making weight, and all showed excellent discipline and professionalism throughout the weekend.

On day one, all but 3 of our fight team had been drawn to fight – Lorna, Ben, Ali, Davey and Jade fought a semi-final fight each, and Rebecca showed incredible courage fighting through 3 rounds of her first ever fight against a much more experienced opponent. With 0 fights to Sam’s 15+, Bec never backed down, stayed calm and strong, and fought hard all the way to the end.

By the end of day one, we had secured 4 bronze medals, and Lorna was through to the final to fight for gold after a strong performance, winning by TKO in the first round.

Sunday was an exciting day of fights with our last 3 fighters through to the finals – Lily also had her first fight on Sunday, and she put on an impressive performance to come away with a silver medal by decision. Kyl secured gold as no one wanted to fight him – just kidding – as there were no opponents in his weight division, Kyl secured a spot to represent Australia in the Junior Worlds! It certainly pays to just show up, because you never know what could happen!

Lorna and Jack both fought very tough opponents, but represented Urban very well with incredibly strong performances. Both fighters lost on points to come away with 2 Silver metals.

After 2 days the results were as follows:

  • Jade – Bronze
  • Lily – Silver
  • Lorna:
    • Semi-Final: Win
    • Final: Silver
  • Kyl – Walk through to Gold
  • Ben – Bronze
  • Jack – Silver
  • Ali – Bronze
  • Davey – Bronze
  • Rebecca – Loss

We are so proud of our team no matter the result. Each performed with heart, professionalism and the highest level of sportsmanship.   Congratulations to all our fighters!
